People recite the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra during the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap Pooja. The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is one of the most important mantras in Hinduism and is believed to provide relief from various conditions and afflictions. The mantra is as follows: “Om Trayambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat.”
The meaning of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is as follows: “Om. We worship the three-eyed Lord Shiva, who is ambrosial and nourishes all beings. May he protect us from all conditions, like a cucumber defended from its stem. May he liberate us from death, for the sake of eternity.”
A group of well-informed pandits proficient in Vedic scriptures and rituals performs the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap Pooja. The pooja is typically conducted in the morning and lasts for approximately three hours. The following is the procedure for the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap Pooja:
The pooja begins with the recitation of the Ganesh Mantra, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, who is believed to remove obstacles.
The pandits then recite the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra a specific number of times, which may vary based on the participant’s circumstances.
Following the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, the Rudra Abhishekam is performed. This ritual involves pouring water and other sacred offerings on the Shivalinga, which symbolizes Lord Shiva.
The pooja concludes with the distribution of prasad, a blessed food considered a gift from the deity.
